The International 2019 winners make history and earn $15 million

The months long The International Dota 2 tournament has reached its conclusion following qualifiers, play-offs and the main event.

Held in Shanghai this year, The International 2019 was a thrilling affair and last year’s winners OG have once again claimed the title of TI Champions.

OG is comprised of:

  • Anathan ‘ana’ Pham
  • Topias ‘Topson’ Taavitsainen
  • Sebastien ‘Ceb’ Debs
  • Jesse ‘JerAx’ Vainikka
  • Johan ‘N0tail’ Sundstein
  • Titouan ‘Sockshka’ Merloz (coach)

This victory makes OG not only the first team to win The International back-to-back but also the first team to win the tournament twice. In nine years The International has never had a repeat winner much less the exact same team lineup winning twice.

OG lost the first game of five to Team Liquid who were also vying for a second grand final at The International. Team Liquid had a strong showing with a Meepo quickly spiralling out of control to keep OG in check.

But the 2018 champions rallied and won game two in spectacular fashion with Topson pulling off some spectacular plays with Monkey King.

That’s were Liquid seemed to lose the plot and failed to win the next two games with OG growing stronger and more confident as the Aegis of Champions came closer to returning to their hands.

With this win, OG has cemented itself as the best team in professional Dota and won itself $15 million. Liquid walks away with $4 million while third place winners LGD earned $3 million.

In total The International 2019 handed out $34 311 243 in prize money, the largest prize pool yet and the largest in esports history.

You can watch highlights from the grand finals below. Be sure to pay careful attention to how OG spams the chat wheel and emotes to get into the heads of Liquid, it’s rather masterful.
