Crotch-mounted Vive Tracker is perfect for… a virtual reality wasp

Developers are continually trying to make new and exciting experiences with virtual reality software and hardware, including Zi Ye who made something rather special using HTC’s Vive Tracker.

By mounting the hardware on a strap around his waste Ye created a third input aside from the controllers in his hands, and applied that to an animal where that would make sense: a wasp.

In a short video he shared recently (embedded below) he showed off the idea which was made in Unity. Here a player can control a wasp and use it to pop balloons with its stinger.

Just a warning before you hit play, the first half of the video doesn’t have audio but the second half does, and it’s rather loud and caught us off guard.

Okay if you managed to watch that and not smile a bit we’re not sure what’s wrong with you.

The entire premise is a bit goofy and, of course, it’s one step closer to the truest application of VR out there: pornography.

We’re sure some big name companies are out there already working on commercial software and hardware where you can thrust away at digital constructs all day every day, but seeing a solo dev throwing it together on the weekend and applying it to a wasp minigame is hilarious to us.

Ye is part of the team over on Owlchemy Labs who have shipped a number of VR titles like Job Simulator and Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality. While having a Vive Tracker strapped to your belt probably won’t be part of the next game they ship, we sincerely hope Ye pitches something to that effect in the next meeting.

Alternatively: with Bee Simulator coming out soon there’s a proven market for insect-based simulation games. Maybe we’ll see Wasp Dating Sim 2k19 with VR mating in the near future.
