New LG G8X ThinQ and Dual Screen surface at IFA 2019

In the lead up to IFA 2019, which kicks off today in Berlin, LG teased the release of its latest flagship phone, along with a screen accessory to accompany the device. Now we know the name of the new device, along with the specifications it will be sporting, as the LG G8X ThinQ and Dual Screen see the light of day.

While these are indeed new devices, for all intents and purposes, the setup here is quite similar to what LG revealed at MWC 19 earlier this year, as the G8X ThinQ and Dual Screen are a high-specced flagship phone and attachable second screen combination.

The difference though lies in the subtle improvements to the user experience, and components that LG has made.

To that end the G8X features a 6.4″ Full HD+ (2340×1080) display, with the Dual Screen being the same in both dimension and resolution. The latter also has a 2.1″ cover screen for when users want to close the pair up like a book (akin to the Galaxy Fold), but still wish to have notifications be easy to view.

As for other elements on the smartphone side of things, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset is present, with 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage added. There’s also a 32MP camera up front, and dual lens setup on the rear (12MP standard, 13Mp ultra-wide angle), with a 4 000mAh battery powering things.

The Dual Screen has no form of battery, and draws power from the G8X, which therefore begs the question what kind of battery life users can expect when the pair are working together?

For that though, LG has not revealed in detail.

The South Korean firm has however noted that the G8X ThinQ and Dual Screen will be available in select markets in Q4 this year, although precise dates and pricing have not been revealed.

With only the G8S ThinQ launching locally, we’ll have to wait to see if LG Mobile South Africa has plans to bring the new flagship phone and accessory to our shores.
