Apple Arcade coming to the App Store on 19th September for $4.99 a month

Earlier this year at its annual WWDC developers conference, we got a surprise announcement in the form of Apple Arcade. At the time the firm explained that it would be a gaming platform for owners of Apple hardware and devices to enjoy mobile titles, but little more was known about the offering.

That changed this evening though as Apple Arcade was the first topic of discussion during Apple’s iPhone 11-focused event.

More specifically Apple confirmed a launch date, with it arriving on 19th September worldwide via the App Store, and playable on compatible iPhone, iPad, MacBook and Apple TV devices at different times of the year.

iOS users will get first crack on the 19th, with iPadOS and tvOS will get it a couple of weeks later on the 30th and macOS Catalina will need to wait until October.

The firm also noted that it plans to launch the platform in more than 150 countries, although it has not listed them, leaving us in South Africa in the lurch as to whether we too can experience the platform next week.

While we await that information, we do have an idea of pricing for Apple Arcade, for those residing Stateside at least.

To that end it will cost $4.99 a month, which grants a family of users access to the 100+ titles available on Arcade. The service will also be free to trial for a month, should be interested in trying it out.

Given how much Apple is investing into Arcade, it will be interesting to see if this push into mobile gaming reaps the rewards the company is looking for.
