Canon debuts EOS M200 as new mirrorless entry-level option

If you’re looking to upgrade from your point-and-shoot to something a but more powerful, Canon recently revealed its new EOS M200 mirrorless camera.

It’s an entry-level offering in the EOS range and now replaces the M100 in the lineup. While this latest iteration features the same 24.1MP APS-C sensor as the previous model, Canon has changed more than just the name on the EOS M200.

To that end a new DIGIC 8 processor is found, which helps to deliver an improved eye-detection and dual pixel autofocus and the ability to record 4K video at 24fps and capture 4K stills.

The upshot of the dual pixel autofocus according to Canon is the ability to take pictures of moving objects/subjects while still maintaining a blurred background for those oh so coveted bokeh shots for portrait photography.

Added to this is an ISO speed of 100-25 600, with Canon noting that the new DIGIC 8 processor tackles the reduction of image blur and noise when shooting in darker locations.

Shifting back to the 4K recording, it’s done at a 1.6 times crop. This is handy, as Engadget points, as it essentially allows the 15-45mm lens kit on the EOS M200 to shoot in 4K equivalent to that of a 38-115mm lens.

As for when the Japanese company plans to make the M200 available to purchase, the new mirrorless camera will land in select regions in October for a recommended $549 (~R8 250) in either the black or white colour options. We’re still awaiting word from Canon South Africa on local price and availability, both of which should be confirmed this week.

If you want better pics than your smartphone can muster, the Canon EOS M200 may prove a good option if you’re on a budget.
