R4699 for the Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot collector’s edition in South Africa

Due to the size and relative high price of collector’s editions, not all of them make it to the shores of South Africa. For the most expensive version of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, local fans will be able to buy the collector’s edition, but it’s suitably pricey.

Two local retailers – BT Games and Raru – have the collector’s edition for the game, both listed at R4 699. It’s worth noting, however, that at the time of writing BT Games has discounted pre-orders of the product down to R4 245.

While that’s obviously a huge sum of money, how does our local pricing compare to what people overseas will be paying? Publisher and co-developer Bandai Namco is directly selling the collector’s edition for €229.99 in Europe, and $199.95 in the US. As the US prices usually don’t include local state tax, and South African pricing is usually closer to that in Europe, we will compare it to that instead.

Right now €229.99 converts to about R3 786. That means that the difference in price is R913, if you’re looking at the base price of the product. Those thinking about buying at the discounted price from BT Games are looking at a price difference of R459.

Considering the size of this collector’s edition, that price difference isn’t too shocking. Anyone who has tried to import anything larger that an envelope into the country can attest to the exorbitant cost of shipping which is then compounded by seemingly random (and usually high) import fees and duties.

As for what you actually get in the box, there’s a copy of the game in a steelbook (with a season pass), an artbook, a map of the game’s world and the big ticket item – a rather large figurine diorama.

This diorama depicts Goku and young Gohan on the Flying Nimbus, and one of the franchise’s interpretations of a dinosaur. It looks like the majority of the plastic here, aside from the dinosaur, has gone into the detailed mountainous base which features the Dragon Ball Z logo.

The entire diorama piece measures in at 20 centimetres cubed. We’re not, at this time anyway, sure of the weight or quality of the diorama, and if it’s up to par with other expensive figurines.

What we do know is that the collector’s edition is only available for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but the game will also launch on PC once the release date of 17th January 2020 rolls around.
