Acer aiming for 20% market share locally with its Predator gaming brand

This year’s Vodacom rAge Expo is currently underway, and one of the event’s key exhibitors is Acer, with the Taiwanese manufacturer showcasing its Predator gaming brand in particular.

During a media briefing at rAge 2019, the firm ran through some of the latest additions to the Predator gaming notebook lineup, all of which were unveiled globally at IFA in Berlin earlier this month.

Following the briefing we sat down Acer country manager, Paul Collins and brand ambassador Julia “Bish” Robson, to discuss the company’s local plans, as well as how it aims to increase its market share in an already competitive gaming market.

Speaking about the Predator brand in other regions, Collins explained that it performing extremely well in Europe and the Middle East, with market shares of roughly 21 and 21.5 percent respectively. South Africa is a little different he concedes, with it sitting at about the five to six percent mark.

This as Collins explained, is down to local consumers still favouring more entry-level devices when it comes to notebooks, which is not where Acer has been placing its focus for Predator. Instead the brand aims to grow in the premium and high-end segments specifically, with Collins outlining a 20 percent market share over the next nine months.

In order to achieve that goal he acknowledges that Acer needs to do a better job of making devices more readily available locally once they’ve been revealed globally. As such the firm wants to shrink down those windows, and looking at increasing its online retail presence too, in order to achieve some of its ambitious goals.

As for the company’s presence at rAge 2019, Collins notes that it had to decide between rAge and Comic Con Africa, with it having opted for the latter last year via retail partners. 2019 though marks the first occasion that Acer has a dedicated Predator branded stand at such an event.

Working on the advice of Robson, Acer decided to opt for rAge 2019 this year as it talks directly to the type of consumer it’s aiming to attract. It also provides a good opportunity for local enthusiasts to experience the hardware and see the different technologies that Acer has been working on.

As such Robson says that she has been urging Acer to engage more proactively with the local gaming community, which means we could start seeing far more Predator-focused events in future.

Whether Acer can indeed achieve that ambitious goal remains to be seen, but it’s clear that the firm is aware of how important it is to engage with the local gaming community, as well as more its latest devices more quickly available to purchase.

On that note, Acer has a few hardware specials available at Vodacom rAge should you wish to support it in its push for market share.
