Galaxy Fold launches in South Korea tomorrow, but still no official date for SA

2019 was supposed to be the year that foldable phones disrupted the mobile industry, but to date neither the Samsung Galaxy Fold nor the Huawei Mate X have made their commercial debuts, despite being unveiled in late February at MWC 19.

While we still await word on the Mate X, which Huawei Mobile South Africa aims to launch locally before the year’s end, we are expecting to see the Galaxy Fold land on SA’s shores this month.

We’re still unsure of when this month Samsung plans to make its foldable flagship available, but those residing in the firm’s native South Korea can purchase it tomorrow.

The company confirmed that the Galaxy Fold will be ready to purchase as of 6th September in South Korea, with a press release adding that other regions will receive the phone in coming weeks.

Those other regions are listed as, “France, Germany, Singapore, U.K., U.S., and more.”

We’re hoping that South Africa falls into the more category, but local representatives have stayed mum on the matter, only mentioning to us at the Galaxy Note 10 launch that the Fold would arrive later this month.

Interestingly the aforementioned press release notes that, “a 5G-ready option in select countries, consumers will be able to unfold the future on the fastest network speeds available.”

It sadly does not allude to which select countries are being considered, but seeing as how the necessary spectrum for 5G has not been outlined for South Africa, the chances of us getting that model are slim at the moment.

Another consideration is when the next iteration of Galaxy Fold is unveiled, with next year’s MWC only five months away, is it worthwhile buying the foldable phone now when an improved successor is just around the corner?

Either way we’re interested in trying out the Galaxy Fold when it arrives here to see whether it is indeed the game changer that Samsung is billing it as.
