Nokia leading the way when it comes to Android updates

Ever since HMD Global began making Nokia Mobile devices, the firm has been touting the fact that its phones feature a pure version of Android that not only serves up a cleaner looking OS, but also means that security and software Android updates are released in a timely manner.

The latest research from Counterpoint appears to back up the firm’s claims with Nokia leading the way when it comes to phone makers and Android updates, both on the security and software side of things.

The research firm also notes that its numbers are based on devices sold from Q3 2018 onwards.

With the rollout of updates following a release of the latest version of Android routinely proving an issue, the fact that Nokia is leading the way with 96 percent of its devices fully updated, according to Counterpoint, is certainly a feather in the cap.

It’s also a factor that many manufacturers seem to be overlooking in the research firm’s opinion.

“Little effort is expended by the top manufacturers in focusing on regular updates to the operating system and device security, despite it being a critical element in the continued safe performance of the smartphone,” explains Counterpoint research director, Peter Richardson.

“Many of the key features including battery life, processor, camera and memory are linked to the performance of the underlying operating system. We believe it is important to the overall consumer experience and is likely to become more widely recognized as such,” Richardson adds.

As for the other companies that are behind Nokia, rounding up the top three are Samsung and Xiaomi with 89 percent and 84 percent respectively. The next manufacturer listed is Huawei, which will likely change in coming months given how US trade restrictions are effecting the company’s relationship with Google.

If regular updates are a concern for you, it looks like Nokia is the go-to option for you.
