Samsung has made a flurry of announcements for IFA 2019, with its electronics in particular coming into focus at the Berlin-based event. One of the more interesting announcements came in the form of adding support for 8K HDR10+ content for its TVs moving forward.
“HDR10+ technology optimizes brightness and maximizes the contrast ratio, making bright areas brighter and dark areas darker. The feature is available on all UHD TV and 2019 8K TV models, including Samsung’s lineup of QLED TVs,” the firm noted in a press statement.
“With HDR emerging as one of the most important technologies for ultra-high picture quality, our HDR10+ format enables every image to be accurately displayed on screen just as the creator intended. We will continue to strengthen our industry leadership through establishing partnerships with top streaming service providers and equipping our televisions with the technology needed to support the world’s first 8K HDR10+,” explained said Hyogun Lee, EVP of the visual display business at Samsung Electronics.
All of the aforementioned streaming service providers are based in Europe, with CHILI, The Explorers and MEGOGO, highlighted as OTT (Over-the-top) providers that Samsung is aiming to partner with initially.
The firm adds that it is in talks with other providers as well.
“Rakuten TV, Deutsche Telekom’s Magenta TV and Videociety are all expected to adopt HDR10+ support for its respective VOD services between Q4 2019 and Q1 2020. Also, Molotov, the first French OTT streaming service to offer live and on-demand TV channels all in one place, is also considering to adopt HDR10+,” Samsung highlighted.
Along with 8K HDR10+, Samsung has noted that 4K HDR10+ support is also being made available for the three service providers.
As such that could potentially open up opportunities for local service providers to bring more 4K HDR10+ content to new Samsung TVs, especially as the chance of 8K HDR10+ content is less likely.
That said no mention has been made by Samsung Electronics SA about its plans to add support for more local 4K and 8K content on 2019 TV models.
