Nikon debuts Z 50 as new lightweight mirrorless camera

We’ve seen a number of mirrorless cameras enter the market in recent years, with Fujifilm arguably leading the way with its X-series, but now competitor Nikon has a new offering in the form of the Z 50.

This new mirrorless camera is a first for the Japanese company as it features the ability to support DX-format lenses. To that end Nikon will be selling two different lens bundles on the Z 50, for the US at least, with a 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 and 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 options available.

The body only option cost $859 and is expected Stateside next month, but at the time of writing we have not stopped the Z 50 available for pre-order with local retailers, so SA pricing and availability still incoming.

As for who this new mirrorless camera is aimed at, Nikon explains that the content creator crowd is a key focus, with its video features in particular being a unique selling point.

Before we delve into the video capabilities of the Z 50, let’s touch on the more basic elements, with Nikon opting for a 20.9 megapixel CMOS sensor. There’s also an EXCEED 6 image processing engine present, along with a broad ISO range of 100-51200.

As for video Nikon says the Z 50 can support full-frame 4K UHD recording thanks to the DX-format design. The Japanese company has also added video functions such as slow-mo and timelapse, with the latter yielding 4K UHD and Full HD content in-camera.

The last element worth noting is the support for SnapBridge which will allow users to transfer high quality images from their Z 50 to their smartphone, with Nikon saying this has been integrated for those who place a lot of their content on social media.

Should the Nikon Z6 or Z7 mirrorless cameras be too big a jump for you, the new Z 50 might prove a better option for those wanting to step up their photography.
