Google Stadia launching in select countries come 19th November

Ever since Google Stadia was first announced in March of this year, we’ve been closely following developments surrounding this game streaming platform. When last we heard about it, we found that it would be launching in 14 countries some time in November, but a precise date was unknown at the time.

While South Africa is not one of the 14, we now have a launch date, with yesterday’s Made By Google event confirming that it would launch on 19th November.

Access is opening up to those people who pre-ordered the Founder’s Edition of Google Stadia, with it also retailing for $129.99 currently. Before you go pre-ordering, you’ll need to be in the following countries in order to access the service – the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

Should you reside in one of those countries, Google adds that Stadia will be up and running come 18:00 CET on the 19th.

For now Google is only offering Founder’s Editions of Stadia to interested consumers, with it serving gaming content up to 4K at 60fps, should your internet connectivity be capable of handling the requirements. The company also adds that after the first three months, Stadia will cost $9.99 per month, with 41 different titles scheduled to be on the roster for the platform, including the likes of Destiny 2: Shadowkeep and Cyberpunk 2077.

If you’re wondering when or indeed if Google plans to bring Stadia to countries like South Africa, no mention has been made at the time of writing. That said, the base version of Google Stadia which supports titles at up to 1080p at 60fps, is planned for rollout next year.

With that version having fewer demands in terms of connectivity and hardware requirements, it may prove a better option for local gaming enthusiasts.

For now though we’ll have to wait to see if Google does indeed have plans for a South African launch. In the interim it may be worthwhile seeing how Stadia performs in its first few weeks, before jumping in to pick up a Founder’s Edition.
