Firefox is finally getting a translate tool but it won’t be cloud based

Despite being big fans of Mozilla’s Firefox browser we will admit that certain features could be present to improve the overall experience.

One of those features is a translation tool which, while present in Google’s Chrome browser, is missing from Firefox.

As it turns out there is a good reason for the feature not being present – Firefox is busy creating one, well that and when it initially planned to release a translator it wasn’t financially viable. What’s more is that the feature won’t be cloud based like Google’s solution but will rather be loaded client side.

The tool will make use of a machine-learning based translation library that will sit on your computer. The library itself is being developed by the Bergamot Project according to ZDNet and will reportedly slip into Mozilla’s user interface which is awaiting a tool such as this.

A short video showcasing Bergamot Project’s work is embedded below and it appears to be working well, or at least as well as Chrome’s solution does.

Of course we’ll have to see how well the translator works in the real world but the prospect of having a translator available to us on-device is rather appealing.

When we can expect this feature to be launched is unclear at this stage but we’ll be sure to update you when it goes live.
