Doom may be Eternal, but a delay pushes it back to 2020

Doom Eternal, the newest game in the franchise and the sequel to the superb 2016 title, has been delayed until 20th March 2020.

The original release date for the game was 22nd November of this year, so the delay constitutes about fours months.

In an official announcement this decision is explained to be a rather simple one: to increase the quality of the game and live up to the standards that the 2016 game set.

It can be argued that the move is also based on the fact that the end of 2019 is, and will continue to be, saturated by new releases which Doom Eternal would have had to compete with. Pokémon Sword and Shield, The Outer Worlds, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Death Stranding and many others are all still scheduled to come out before 2019 finally ends.

Other games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Shenmue 3 would offer stiff competition, even for fans of this new breed of Doom game.

Regardless of the delay being technical or financial in nature, more time in development can only mean a better end product when the new release date rolls around.

On top of this move three important changes were also announced:

  • Invasion Mode, which will allow you to enter another player’s game as a playable demon, will release as a free update shortly after launch.
  • Doom Eternal for Nintendo Switch will release after the other platforms. We will announce that date in the future.
  • Doom 64 will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in addition to Nintendo Switch. We are adding Doom 64 as a pre-order bonus for Doom Eternal on all platforms so you’ll be able to download and play this classic game, for free, just for pre-ordering Doom Eternal. Doom 64 will be released on March 20, 2020 on all platforms.

The first two points on that list are, unfortunately, their own delays. We’re not too bummed by the Invasion Mode move as the singleplayer in Doom Eternal will apparently take around 20 hours to complete, which is more than double the length of the 2016 game.

The Switch port move is also understandable given the immense job of getting such a complex game onto the relatively weak hardware of the console.

Finally that free Doom 64 port is a nice inclusion, even if we always recommend not pre-ordering.
