Mike Scott releases “South Africa’s first full-length 2D animated movie”

Local animator Mike Scott has quite the penchant for breakthroughs in the industry, having created the show MooseBox as the first South African animation on Nickelodeon. Now he’s back with a feature-length film. Kind of.

Bru & Boegie is another original creation from Scott which has been fleshed out in a series of shorts which he has been uploading to his YouTube channel Mike Scott Animation. At the time of writing there have been around 10 of these shorts, all of which can be watched in this playlist.

Yesterday, however, we got something much lengthier from these characters, which Scott calls “South Africa’s first full-length 2D animated movie”. Looking at the embed of the video below – which clocks in at 94 minutes – you may be wondering why we had to use inverted  commas there.

It’s because, and we have to spoil the movie here, it’s a joke. Around 90 minutes of the movie is a loop of one of the characters meditating, with the only change during that time being the music and a few other characters wandering on screen for a bit.

Bru & Boegie mention this themselves in the video, and it’s all predicated on the fact that the budget here was “five bucks”.

Our favourite meta joke here, however, has to be the one that comes right at the end. Just before the credits when one of the characters mentions that “people won’t be happy about this” before the other character remarks that they’re adding it to Wikipedia regardless.

Lo and behold, if you go to the Wikipedia page for List of South African animated feature films, Bru & Boegie is the latest addition.

Yes, we know that Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, and this is likely to be removed, so here’s an image of the relevant section of the page while Bru & Boegie are still included.

One may suspect that Scott himself made this change to the page – to complete the joke – but the revision history shows that it came from someone in Canada. Now Scott could be using a VPN, but we like to think that some international fan of SA animation did it.

While we’ve had to spoil this video to explain what makes it special (and convince you to click on such a long feature) the rest of Scott’s channel is full of other stuff to watch.

Top of our recommendations is the Baby Shark remix, made in collaboration with The Kiffness. Main member of The Kiffness, David Scott, is actually Mike Scott’s brother. You can also watch the original pilot for MooseBox, and this trailer for the first season.
