New version of G1’s Ponyta revealed after ridiculous 24 hour livestream

Recently Pokémon subjected their fans to something rather absurd: a 24 hour livestream to promote the upcoming Sword and Shield games, in which very little was shown and most of the hours were filled with a static forest called Glimwood Tangle. The sole new information from the stream was brief glances of Galarian Ponyta, which has now been officially revealed.

If that name sounds familiar it’s because Ponyta isn’t a new Pokémon, but has been around since the beginning in generation one (G1). Since the previous set of mainline games (Sun and Moon) there have been more regional variants of older Pokémon, which take on new looks and new typing for the different region.

As Sword and Shield are set in the region of Galar, this new version of Ponyta is called Galarian Ponyta. Instead of being a fire type, this time around Ponyta is psychic and looks a lot like a My Little Pony ripoff with large, multi-coloured hair and a small horn.

The original Ponyta did evolve into Rapidash, which also has a horn. We assume that the eventual Galarian Rapidash will be a mystical unicorn type Pokémon, or maybe even a pegasus / flying unicorn.

As Galar is based on the United Kingdom, a unicorn would make a lot of sense. Scotland is part of the UK, and its national animal is the unicorn. Yes, really.

Those who spent all those hours watching the livestream have now been rewarded with a trailer (embedded below) as well as some official information about the new Pokémon –

“Galarian Ponyta have been found in a certain forest of the Galar region since ancient times. It is said that they were exposed to the overflowing life energy of the forest over many generations, and therefore their appearance became unique in this region.”

The colourful and glowing mane on the Pokémon is said to be “the life energy of the surrounding atmosphere”.

More information about this new addition can be found in the official page on Pokemon.com. We also recommend reading this great written timeline of the 24 hour livestream which explains every tiny thing that happened throughout.

Galarian Ponyta will be exclusive to Pokémon Shield. For Sword, Sirfetch’d will be available instead. Sirfetch’d is also a new spin on an original Pokémon, as it’s a new evolution for Farfetch’d, another G1 original. Pokémon sure do love recycling, don’t they?
