PayPal confirms refund policy change will not apply to sellers in Africa

Last week we reported on a story concerning PayPal and a change in its policy that would see the company take a percentage of refunds from sellers on the platform.

At the time the it was believed that this policy update would affect all sellers and merchants on the platform, but PayPal has reached to Hypertext to confirm that this will not apply to those in Africa.

“Earlier this year, PayPal updated its User Agreement to change our refund policy in certain markets.  In line with industry practice, and according to our updated policy, we do not charge fees to process refunds, but when a seller refunds a transaction to a buyer, the fees originally paid will not be returned to the seller.  The policy change is going into effect beginning on October 11, 2019 in Australia, France and the United States,” the firm explained in a statement sent to Hypertext.

As such it should give those merchants operating in Africa a bit more peace of mind, but how those in countries like the US, France and Australia will react to being treated differently to their international peers remains to be seen.

For now at least, it looks as if PayPal is moving ahead with its policy change, despite having to place it hold earlier in the year due to protestations from the seller community.

It will therefore be interesting to see what the reaction to the policy’s reinstating on 11th October will be received.
