PlayStation 5 expected to launch during 2020 festive season

Ever since Wired first shared exclusive details regarding the PlayStation 5, one vital element was missing from the reports surrounding the console – a release date.

Now we know when we should see the PS5 as Wired once again has the exclusive inside track, noting that it is expected to debut during the 2020 festive season.

Sharing the news is Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, who also confirms that the console will indeed be called the PlayStation 5, so all the codenames came be discarded now.

Wired also spoke with system architect Mark Cerny about the PS5, with him noting a few interesting details, such as the console’s ability to support ray tracing, with him clarifying that it is driven acceleration in the GOU hardware and not software as some may have thought when some information emerged earlier this year.

Given the exclusive nature of the work Wired has done for this story, we’re going to leave things there, and ask that you read the full article by Peter Rubin here.

What we can do in the interim is speculate when Sony plans to reveal a proper teaser for the PS5. In recent years the company has been selective in the global gaming events it has chosen to feature at, having already given this year’s E3 expo a miss.

Whether it does the same next year remains to be seen, but Microsoft likely wanting to showcase its Project Scarlett console, which sports some similar specs on paper, the two rivals could square off once again in Los Angeles in 2020.

Either way we’re set to receive two new next-gen consoles in the coming year, so it’s time to save up and pledge your gaming allegiances.
