Samsung is patching the Galaxy S10’s fingerprint scanner bug

Last week we learned that the Samsung Galaxy S10’s in-display fingerprint scanner featured an alarming bug.

That bug allowed a user to unlock the handset by placing a silicon cover over the display and scanning a fingerprint. This will unlock the handset even if the fingerprint isn’t enrolled.

“This issue involved ultrasonic fingerprint sensors unlocking devices after recognizing 3-dimensional patterns appearing on certain silicone screen protecting cases as users’ fingerprints,” explained Samsung.

The firm is now rolling out a patch with users in Korea being the first to get it.

There’s no word on when this security patch will be rolled out to customers in other countries but we wouldn’t be surprised if the patch is delivered sooner rather than later. According to Reuters, Samsung Galaxy S10 users will receive a notification when the update can be downloaded.

“Samsung Electronics takes the security of products very seriously and will make sure to strengthen security through continuing improvement and updates to enhance biometric authentication functions,” the firm said in a statement.

The firm has advised that users who make use of silicon covers remove them for safety reasons until the patch has been rolled out.
