Tim Cook appointed chairman at Chinese university

Tsinghua University located in Beijing, China has appointed a new chairman of its Advisory Board of the School of Economics and Management – Tim Cook.

The Apple chief executive officer will fill the role for three years but this is not his debut at the university as he’s served on the board since 2013. In fact, Cook is not the only Silicon Valley bigwig on the board. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is also on the board according to the South China Morning Post.

However, Zuckerberg has seemingly not attending a board meeting twice this year. Now, one could argue the lad has a lot on his plate but his thoughts regarding China and censorship in the country may be inspiring him to avoid China and miss this most recent meeting.

Apple on the other hand has recently courted controversy recently for removing an application that mapped where police were in Hong Kong during protests using crowdsourced information. Apple said that the app violated its guidelines.

While serving on a university’s board seems innocuous enough, Cook’s appointment comes at a particularly questionable time. Apple is losing market share in China and the ongoing trade war can’t be helping the firm either.

The chairman position will no doubt help Cook get closer to Chinese lawmakers but whether that will be a good thing remains to be seen.
