Fortnite streamer handed lifetime ban for cheating

Not very often does a teachable moment present itself but today we’ve struck gold.

Epic Games has handed a Fortnite streamer and content creator a lifetime ban after it was discovered he was cheating.

The streamer in question is known as Jarvis and he boasts just over two million subscribers on YouTube and close on 600 000 followers on Twitch. According to his Twitch channel, Jarvis is also a member of FaZe clan.

So with that clout and reach, why cheat?

The streamer explains in a video (embedded below) that he was using the cheats to create content on YouTube.

“All I was thinking about while I was making those videos was just how entertaining and how interesting those videos would be for you guys to watch. It didn’t even cross my mind that I could be banned from Fortnite for life from those videos,” Jarvis said to his viewers.

And that brings us to the teachable moment.

Had Jarvis bothered to check the end user license agreement (EULA) for Fortnite he would have found a clause stating that Epic Games expressly forbids cheating.

However, according to a report by Sky News, Jarvis is just 17 at time of writing. That doesn’t excuse what he did at all but there is something to be said for how complex the EULA for Fortnite is considering children play the game.

Granted, Epic does state that if a child wants to play the game a parent or guardian must sign the EULA. But having a parent sign something and having a child comprehend what is being signed are two very different things.

Cheating is wrong and should absolutely be punished but Epic Games could make its EULA a bit clearer for the younger generation that is lining its pockets.

The streamer says this is the first time he has done something like this adding that he has never done it in a competitive environment.

Look, we get it. A video titled “I cheated in Fortnite” is primed for drawing in clicks but when the net result is you losing your ability to play the game you love, perhaps reconsider.
