Google Assistant can now read out personalised news feeds

There is a new feature on the way for the next time you say “Hey Google”. This feature comes in the form of a personalised news feed that Google Assistant will read aloud when prompted.

These curated news feeds is called Your News Update and it is based upon the type of news content that you enjoy reading when using a Google service. The feature will be available on both smartphones and smart speakers that support Google Assistant, with the feed containing shorter stories summing up basic events, and longer form stories for in-depth articles.

The system works in a very similar way to some of the other news-focused features that Google currently employs.

As such if you’re a fan of a particular sports team, news stories would normally appear on the Google home page when signed in and opening up your browser. Now those kinds of stories will be read aloud.

Google says the feature is rolling out to Assistant in the coming days Stateside only for now, and if you find yourself in that neck of the woods, you can set up the feature yourself.

You’ll find it under the YOU tab in the app. From there you’ll tap the NEWS tab and then CHANGE YOUR PLAYLIST FORMAT.

At the moment, no mention of whether Google plans to roll it out to other regions anytime soon.
