Half-Life: Alyx launches March 2020, is free for Valve Index owners

Earlier this week Valve dropped something of a bombshell with the official announcement of Half-Life: Alyx, the next game in the franchise which will be a VR game. At the time no other details were provided, but now we have a load of information to sort through.

Firstly our guess, and the guesses of many others were correct: this game will be set after the first Half-Life but before Half-Life 2. Titular character Alyx Vance will need to fight her way into City 17 to rescue her father and uncover a secret.

“VR was built for the kind of gameplay that sits at the heart of Half-Life, and Half-Life: Alyx was built from the ground up for VR. You’ll be able to play it on any SteamVR compatible system,” Valve writes.

To that end Valve has outlined the many ways to play their new title on the dedicated Half-Life website. Roomscale, sitting and standing setups are all supported here, as are three different types of movement (teleport, shift and continuous).

More of the game can be viewed on its Steam Store page which outlines important factors like the PC specs you’ll need to run it, a synopsis and the local pricing for wherever you live.

Those who purchase a Valve Index before the end of 2019 will receive the game for free, along with a bunch of extras including alternative gun skins, themed content for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and special environments for the SteamVR Home space.

Finally, you’ll likely want to see how all of this looks in action, and we have a trailer to show exactly that. It’s quite short at under two minutes but it definitely gives a definitive look at how this game will play.
