Audi adds to EV family with new e-tron Sportback

Audi, like many of the high-profile German carmakers, has been laying out its ambitions to embrace electric vehicles. Having revealed its first ever all-electric SUV earlier this year, now the second EV in Audi’s lineup has been unveiled in the form of the e-tron Sportback.

The new vehicle is also in a similar SUV mould, but is perhaps a bit more sporty, with a profile that sits lower to the ground.

The car was unveiled at the LA Auto Show earlier today, with it expected to land in select European markets in the first half of 2020. Like many of the EVs being revealed these days, there is no mention of whether Audi is planning to release the car in other markets, which means South African drivers too need to wait to hear if it will be launched locally.

With the styling of the e-tron Sportback certainly eye-catching, the key elements at work here are under the body. To that end Audi has employed a dual-electric motor designed to power the Sportback, resulting in 265kW being on offer alongside 561Nm of torque.

The result is a 0-100km/h time of 6.6 seconds and a limited top speed of 200km/h, but more importantly the driving range is estimated at 446 kilometres before a visit to a charging point is required.

If the first two electric vehicles from Audi are anything to go by, it looks the carmaker is focusing on the SUV crowd, but we’re also hoping it is working on something to rival the petrol-powered A1 too.

For now though, we still have to see when Audi plans to brings its new e-trons to SA.
