Opera installs its first African servers in Nigeria

Users of Opera in Nigeria and Africa as a whole should be seeing faster browsing thanks to servers which have recently gone up in Lagos.

This development marks the first time Opera Limited (the developer of Opera) has installed servers on the continent. On top of this it also claims that these servers create the “largest leading data centre in West Africa” which is hosted in the Lekki Data Centre.

Some bold claims about how this will affect speeds in the country. It’s stated that online browsing for Nigerian users will be up to four times faster when using Opera apps like the Mini Browser and Opera Limited.

As we’re not currently in Nigeria to test those claims, take it with a grain of salt.

For the rest of us on the continent these servers should be beneficial, but more may soon pop up in our respective countries. According to a release we received there are plans in place for more data centres in other African countries.

“Two years ago, Opera announced an investment of $100M to facilitate growth in the African digital economy, accelerate internet adoption and strengthen the digital internet ecosystem with our partners in the African region. The launch of our first local data servers in Nigeria is a massive leap towards realising this goal and brings us one step closer towards digitally transforming the lives of even more people across the African continent,” says IT director at Opera, Krystian Zubel.

A report from the first quarter of this year (PDF) claimed that there are 120 million Opera users in Africa, so these new servers should come as a benefit to all of them.
