Two new Sword and Shield trailers unveil a bunch of features

We’re just over a week away from the launch of the two new Pokémon games Sword and Shield, and Nintendo has deemed us fit to receive two trailers for the titles.

The first and shorter of the two focuses on items and new quality of life features.

The first of these are items which can affect Pokémon natures. These have been a feature in the series since generation three and the new mint items will modify this, but not change it entirely.

Pokémon stored in boxes can be switched out at any time, something we saw in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! We assume this will be limited in certain areas to prevent you from cheesing fights by constantly switching out your party.

Returning from previous games are vitamins as well as items which can increase your Pokémon’s levels. For the latter you’re probably thinking of Rare Candy (which raises any Pokémon by exactly one level) but the new Exp. Candies instead supply a certain amount of experience points. Egg moves are also a feature in Sword and Shield.

The much longer “overview trailer” is more of a broad look at the games rather than a showcase of a few mechanics like the previous one.

Watching it over and it appears that this new video is mostly a recut of previously shown content. As such there’s not much new here if you’ve been following the games since its launch. We suppose this “new” trailer does serve as a nice one stop introduction to the Galar region for those who haven’t seen any of the previous reveals and want to get familiar before the games come out.

Thankfully there is some additional information outside of this trailer thanks to a press release which can be read in full on the Pokémon fan site PokéBeach.

Aside from detailing what was seen in the trailers there’s also mention of an online competition called Galar Beginnings which will take place in December this year. This is a single battle tournament that looks to be the first official competitive event for the games. More details about this will be unveiled in the future, but it will be accessible through the game’s main menu.
