Xiaomi’s new CC9 Pro smartphone has a penta-lens and 108MP camera

Yep, you read that headline right, Xiaomi recently unveiled a new smartphone that features a mammoth 108MP camera. Said device is called the CC9 Pro, and it is one of two new smartphones that the Chinese plans to debut this week with the huge lens.

The other is the Mi Note 10, which is scheduled to be revealed in full tomorrow, so for now the CC9 Pro is garnering much of the attention.

If that 108 megapixel size sounds familiar, it is because the CC9 Pro utilises the same camera sensor that Samsung revealed earlier this year – the ISOCELL Bright HMX.

But Xiaomi has not stopped there either, adding a further four lenses to the rear of the device, including a 5MP telephoto, 12MP telephoto, 20MP ultra wide-angle and 2MP macro lens, which on paper at least gives the CC9 Pro one of the most impressive camera setups seen on a smartphone to date.

With the trend in recent years shifting between more lenses and greater megapixels, this new offering from Xiaomi appears to take care of both at once.

Naturally having only been revealed today, the hands-on experiences with the CC9 Pro are yet to roll in, so it remains to be seen how all that photographic power translates in-hand.

The likes of DxOMark, which specialises in testing and grading cameras of all formats, has been able to get some time with the CC9 Pro Premium Edition, giving it a score of 121, which is on par with the infamously locally absent Huawei Mate 30 Pro.

The rest of the device is equally impressive, with a 6.47″ curved Full HD+ display present, a substantial 5 260mAh battery, 6GB or 8GB RAM options, and up to 256GB of onboard storage.

The only sub-par element here (relatively speaking) is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset, so it will be interesting to see if the Mi Note 10 is packing something a little beefier in the processor department.

The Xiaomi CC9 Pro goes on sale in China this week, starting at 2 799 Yuan (~R5 600), but no word on which other regions will be receiving the device at this stage.
