The 19 winners from this year’s Southern Africa Startup Awards

Last week the annual Southern Africa Startup Awards were held in Johannesburg. The event looked to highlight the promising startups to come out of this region of the continent, and in particular offer an increased level of visibility.

Along with taking home a prize, the startups which won last week will go on to considered for the Global Startup Awards to be held in 13th December in China.

The purpose of the Southern Africa Startup Awards is regional connectivity and global visibility. It’s about celebrating Africa and putting African startups, the people behind them, and the organisations that work alongside these visionaries on the map,” explains Mckevin Ayaba, CEO of Setup A Startup.

As for the local winners, there were 19 categories in total, with South African startups be declared the winner in 11. These 19 winners were selected out of 346 regional finalists from 12 countries on the continent, which shows just how many companies are in the space at the moment.

The categories and winners for this year’s Southern Africa Startup Awards were:

  • Best Startup Ecosystem Initiative: GrowthWheel (South Africa).
  • Best Co-working Space: Workshop 17 (South Africa).
  • Best FinTech Startup: Mama Money (South Africa).
  • Best FashionTech Startup: Zabantu (South Africa).
  • Best EduTech Startup: Why Toyz (South Africa).
  • Best HealthTech Startup: Appy Saúde (Angola).
  • Best Food/AgriTech Startup: YouFarm (Zimbabwe).
  • Best Water Crisis Management Solution: Lige Pty Ltd (South Africa).
  • Best Student Startup: Roomscout Ltd (Mauritius).
  • Best Social Impact Startup: Toolboksi (Tanzania).
  • Startup of the Year: LULA (South Africa).
  • Female Role Model of the Year in Tech: Lynette Hundermark (South Africa).
  • Brave Founder of the Year: Joseph Rutakangwa (Mauritius).
  • Founder of the Year: Chiinga Musonda & Lynn Musonda Phiri (Zambia).
  • Investor of the Year: Kalon Venture Partners (South Africa).
  • Best Newcomer: Momsays (South Africa).
  • Best Media Partner: The Loudhailer (South Africa).
  • Best Accelerator/Incubator: Dololo (Namibia).
  • People’s Choice: Muva (Mozambique).
