3D Printed Cybertrucks roll onto the internet

Tesla’s Cybertruck is just as polarising as it was when it was announced, but as the maker community usually does it has taken the design and turned it into a 3D print you can make at home.

One of the first people to do this is Calle Wallerstedt, who published a printable Cybertruck on the very same day it was announced. Wallerstedt has since printed that design and added lighting to it, and was kind enough to tell us about the process.

“The same day [of the announcement] I sat down for 6 hours modelling it in Fusion 360. This was the first time I modelled a car, but since the shapes were kinda simple it wasn’t super hard. I couldn’t just model it from nothing so I gathered a bunch of pictures of it (side view and front view) and I imported them into Fusion 360. I looked up the dimensions and I started modelling,” Wallerstedt says.

Printing the model took a bit longer at 10 hours, going for a smaller desk scale for the vehicle. The version you see on this page is 16 centimetres long, 5.5 centimetres wide, and 5.1 centimetres tall.

To make this more than a static desk prop, lighting was added to the print. It’s a rather simple layout, and it requires a power source nearby, but it adds a lot to the look of it.

You may have noted the plural in the headline, and that was intentional. Since Wallerstedt’s upload sites like Thingiverse and MyMiniFactory have been flooded with many different interpretations of the design.

On top of that, the Thingiverse community has taken this original model and printed it many times over. There’s a bunch of Makes (which you can see here) with our favourite being this version by user rog0978. Not only does it look dead on for the real announcement Cybertruck, but the lighting system now works off of batteries instead.

To make your own Cybertruck head on over to Thingiverse. If you do print it make sure you upload it to the aforementioned Makes section so the rest of the community can see.

If you’re more of a SpaceX person, see our features on the 3D printed Falcon Heavy or the droneship coaster.
