Samsung says it’s sold 1 million Galaxy Fold smartphones

The launch of the Galaxy Fold did not go according to plan for Samsung. By now the woes of the South Korean manufacturer have been well documented, eventually leading to the foldable phone being launched locally far later than initially projected.

Regardless it looks like there is a hankering for a nearly $2 000 foldable phone despite all of the issues that surrounded it at first. This as the firm’s electronics president Young Sohn confirmed the latest sales numbers at TechCrunch Disrupt in Berlin earlier today.

To that end Sohn says one million Galaxy Fold devices have been sold, which is a significant jump from the estimated 500 000 that were reported in October. While Samsung has not revealed an official document with sales to date, if true, that one million clearly shows that there is a market for foldable devices, even if they are very expensive.

“There’s a million people that want to use this product at $2,000,” Sohn told TechCrunch.

What would be of interest to us are the local sales figures. Samsung famously launched the Fold in South Africa in October, with a limited number of devices coming into the country.

With the South Korean firm expected to have a follow-up device in 2020, and hopefully having refined the quality of its manufacturing process, should a new foldable phone hit the market, it too is likely to garner plenty of interest.

If Samsung can bring down the $2 000 price tag of said device, we’d certainly be onboard.
