ASUS announces ROG Strix desktop PCs will land in SA in January

ASUS has announced that it will be bring two desktops from its Republic of Gamers Strix lineup to South Africa in January next year.

Unfortunately that means you’ll have to wait until after the festive season for a new PC but looking at the spec sheets, they may prove worth the wait.

First up we have the affordable ROG Strix GL10CS.

The ASUS ROG Strix GL10CS.

The PC tower contains up to an Intel Core i7-8700, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, 32GB of DDR4 RAM and a 512GB NVMe SSD.

To our mind this would make an excellent streaming PC (as in the PC that renders the stream, not the PC you play on) and it will retail at R19 999. Of course, as you add components that price may change.

The GL10CS also comes equipped with a 1TB 7200RPM HDD. There is also an Intel 802.11ac Wave 2 WiFi card for connectivity.

Interestingly, ASUS says the GL10CS was tested to survive drops and vibration as well as varying temperatures. That having been said, we don’t recommend dropping your PC to put that to the test.

For those that require a bit more power, actually scratch that, A LOT more power the ROG Strix GL12CX will also arrive in late January 2020.

The ROG Strix GL12CX

Here ASUS has opted for up to the following specs:

  • Intel Core i9-9900K (Custom Cooler Mater liquid cooler and factory overclocked up to 5.1GHz)
  • 32GB DDR4 RAM @ 2666MHz
  • Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti 11GB
  • 512GB PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD

While ASUS doesn’t mention the exact motherboard being used here, it does sport an Intel Z390 chipset. We suspect, given the specs given to us the board in question is the ROG MAXIMUS XI GENE.

This is because the GL12CX boasts a single hot-swap SSD bay as well as support for ASUS DIMM.2, which the aforementioned board offers. ASUS DIMM.2 is an interesting feature. Simply put it is two M.2 connections side-by-side that look like a memory slot. The slots boast heatsinks to cool M.2 drives and ASUS says they’re best used in a RAID configuration.

The same WiFi card present in the GL10CS is in the GL12CX but this time there is also support for Bluetooth 5.0.

Frankly this machine is a beast and with prices start at R29 999, it might make for an ideal gift to yourself at the end of January.

As we mentioned you’ll have to wait until 2020 to get your hands on these PCs. There is no word yet on where these will be available but we’d hazard a guess that your favourite tech retailer will have them on offer.
