Bolt is now available in 34 South African cities

Ride sharing service Bolt has expanded its footprint and is now available in 34 cities in South Africa.

The expansion means that Bolt is now available in Free State, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and the North West for the first time since its launch in 2016.

In terms of specific areas Bolt is now available in eMalahleni, Mthatha, Vereeniging, Richard’s Bay, Thohoyandou, Mahikeng and Potchefstroom.

Country manager for Bolt in South Africa, Gareth Taylor, says that Bolt hopes to operational in 40 cities once its 2020 rollout is complete.

“Bolt’s 2019 strategy focused on launching ride-hailing services in more towns and cities outside of the main centres,” said Taylor.

“Expansion into provincial urban centres gives consumers in smaller cities the opportunity to experience the convenience and affordability of on-demand transport for the first time, and provides significant work opportunities for drivers,” the manager added.

Next on the agenda for Bolt is the launch of Bolt Food in South Africa. The food delivery service is available in Estonia and Lithuania will launch in South Africa, Finland and Latvia in the coming months.

Unfortunately there is no word on an official launch date but we’re curious to see whether Bolt takes a similar tack to its 2019 ride sharing service roll out – that is, launching Bolt Food in areas where services such as Uber Eats aren’t.
