Google co-founders handing over control of Alphabet to Sundar Pichai

There is a significant change coming to Google’s parent company – Alphabet – with Larry Page and Sergey Brin relinquishing their control and handed it over to Sundar Pichai. The Google CEO will now oversee the operations of Alphabet, with Page and Brin remaining employees of the company.

The pair, who were co-founders of Google before moving to the parent company, penned a letter on Google’s blog explaining the decision and what the future holds.

“With Alphabet now well-established, and Google and the Other Bets operating effectively as independent companies, it’s the natural time to simplify our management structure,” write Page and Brin.

“We’ve never been ones to hold on to management roles when we think there’s a better way to run the company. And Alphabet and Google no longer need two CEOs and a President. Going forward, Sundar will be the CEO of both Google and Alphabet,” they add.

Page and Brin add that they will continue in a more limited capacity at Alphabet, along with pursuing projects that they are passionate about. Precisely what guise these will take, however, is not clear.

It’s also unclear how the parent company and by extension Google will react to the change in management moving forward, especially given how crucial both have been to the success of the company. To allay any fears, Pichai also wrote a letter following that of Page and Brin noting his intentions for the future of the company.

“I want to be clear that this transition won’t affect the Alphabet structure or the work we do day to day. I will continue to be very focused on Google and the deep work we’re doing to push the boundaries of computing and build a more helpful Google for everyone,” says Pichai.

“At the same time, I’m excited about Alphabet and its long term focus on tackling big challenges through technology,” he concludes.

With Pichai having done a solid job ever since taking over as CEO, especially on the products and consumer-facing side of the business, it now remains to be seen how he can handle some of the bigger issues plaguing both Alphabet and Google.

Namely issues surrounding harassment and discrimination in the workplace, both of which have been thrust into the spotlight in recent years as a result of the companies’ previous management structures and culture.

As such the task ahead of Pichai is as exciting as it is difficult.
