Liquid Telecom welcomes the landing of the METISS cable in KwaZulu-Natal

The Melting Pot Indianoceanic Submarine System, or simply METISS subsea cable has landed at Umbogotwini in KwaZulu-Natal.

The cable will ultimately connect Mauritius, Reunion Island and Madagascar to South Africa when it goes live. The landing of the cable was inaugurated by a group of telecommunication firms, including Liquid Telecom South Africa.

“Everything we do is driven by a simple yet powerful belief that everyone in Africa has the right to be connected. The METISS subsea fibre optic cable underscores the company’s commitment to provide high-speed connectivity to every African on the continent,” general manager for Africa Data Centres South Africa, Dr Angus Hay, said in a statement.

The METISS subsea cable is expected to go live in July 2020.

Following an agreement in 2018 with a consortium of telcos including Canal+ Télécom, CEB Fibernet, Emtel, SRR, Telma, Liquid Telecom South Africa has provided the landing station in KwaZulu-Natal. It will host and manage the submarine cable whilst also providing fibre backhaul to Teraco.

“This partnership with Liquid Telecom is an important step for connecting people and economies of the Indian Ocean islands to South Africa which is among the major internet hubs in Africa. METISS Members would like to thank Liquid Telecom and South African Authorities for this successful collaboration,” said METISS chairperson, Xavier Hermesse.

The METISS cable boasts bandwidth of 24 terabits per second and low latency for business operations, particularly if those operations happen to be in Mauritius, Reunion Island or Madagascar.
