It’s finally happening – Intel showed off its discrete GPU at CES 2020

With AMD currently the belle of the ball for many folks, Intel needs to do some work to win back some of the market share it’s lost in recent months.

Something that may help in that regard is the discrete GPU Intel unveiled at CES 2020.

Dubbed DG1, the GPU is based on Intel’s Xe graphics. Interestingly, this GPU architecture will also be present in Intel’s next generation of mobile processors codenamed Tiger Lake (pictured).

“It is our most disruptive and advanced architecture yet,” said Intel vice president of Architecture for Graphics and Software, Lisa Pearce.

The GPU tech in Tiger Lake reportedly doubles the performance seen in the last generation but we’re guessing a discrete GPU will improve that performance even more.

Unfortunately how well it will perform is an unknown at this stage.

Intel showed DG1 running Destiny 2 very briefly and while frame rates looked smooth on stream, no details about performance were shared.

There’s also no word at all on when we can expect to see DG1 on shelves. Tiger Lake CPUs for notebooks are expected to arrive with OEMs mid-way through 2020 but Intel said nothing about DG1’s availability.

The big question we have is whether consumers will be willing to take a gamble on Intel’s GPUs. While the firm has a good track record when it comes to CPUs we haven’t forgotten about the Intel740 which didn’t exactly set the world on fire.

At least Intel won’t have to partner with AMD to get decent graphics on chips anymore right?
