Fitbit adding blood oxygen monitoring to select devices: Here’s which ones

If you own a Fitbit wearable, you may be interested to find out about a new feature being added to the mix that users have been asking for, for some time – blood oxygen monitoring.

The addition of the feature was initially discovered by some Reddit users and later confirmed by CNET which reached out to Fitbit about the functionality. The company has since noted that the feature is limited to a select number of devices, which includes the Versa, Versa Lite, Versa 2, Ionic and Charge 3.

This as these devices have the necessary sensors to provide an accurate blood oxygen level reading. Namely a mix of red and infrared sensors which determine blood oxygen variation.

While Fitbit did indeed confirm that the feature has been rolled out to a small set of users for testing, it did not mention whether this capability will determined by what membership a user has. As such it remains to be seen if this diagnostic function will only be made available to Premium subscribers.

It’s also unclear whether all regions across the globe will get the feature, but seeing as how the company has a strong presence in South Africa, we have no reason to think otherwise. That said we’re yet to hear any confirmation from Fitbit’s local team on the matter.

For now, as CNET points out, Fitbit has beaten Apple to the punch when it comes to adding blood oxygen monitoring, which should assist in detecting asthma, heart diseases and sleep apnea.

With Google recently announcing plans to purchase the company, this feature could be on the way to any Pixel-branded device that the former could be cooking up.
