Cell C launches Cyber Safety Pilot 2 as continued response to cyberbullying

Together with the Active Education Foundation, Cell C has launched its Cyber Safety Pilot 2 as a means to address the scourge of cyber bullying.

The programme aims to educate learners about responsible and safe mobile use. This includes cyber safety, responsible use of social media platforms and illustrates the dangers of cyberbullying.

“Cyberbullying can – and often does – have a terrible impact on those affected, with victims becoming withdrawn, depressed, angry and frightened,” Human Capital and Transformation officer at Cell C, Juliet Mhango said in a statement.

“Cell C is proud to partner with Active Education to in this initiative, which we hope will educate parents, teachers and children about how to stay safe online, whatever device they use,” Mhango added.

This is the second programme of its kind with Cyber Safety Pilot 1 having run from 2018 through 2019.

Active Education Foundation reached over 50 schools through the programme and that will increase this year. The foundation is also developing a Cyber Safety programme for the Department of Basic Education (DBE).

“Through Cell C’s support of Active Education and the DBE we will reach over 40 000 learners with this positive initiative,” said managing director at Active Education Foundation, Bruce Smuts.

The programme will take the form of industrial theater and be presented at high schools. Parents, teachers and learners will be able to attend these workshops.

Active Education Foundation will also train an activation team that will target 20 schools in KwaZulu-Natal, 10 schools in Limpopo and 25 schools in Western Cape.

Local organisation Web Rangers offers a similar programme in that it teaches children of all ages online safety among other valuable skills in a digital age.

We’re glad to see more of these sorts of initiatives popping up in South Africa especially when they’re supported by big names such as Cell C and the Department of Basic Education.
