Paycode enables social grant payments using offline biometrics

Offline payment superstars Paycode have successfully tested a solution in Mozambique that allows for social grant payments to be authenticated with biometrics.

Together with the Instituto Nacional de Acção Social (INAS) – Mozambique’s social services agency – Paycode Mozambique helped 18 000 citizens create a biometric identity. This information will be used to authenticate social grant payments even if there is no connectivity in an area.

“The combination of biometric authentication and the ability to make payments offline in real time is a winning solution which meets all the criteria for successfully paying social grants in remote locations,” project manager for INAS, Rob Bakker, said in a statement.

The solution is currently in place and just last week cash trucks drove from village to village distributing social grants to Mozambicans.

Paycode chief executive officer Ralph Pecker reiterated his firm’s commitment to enabling financial inclusion through technology.

The firm is seemingly accomplishing this with over four million government salaries, social grants, pensions and agriculture loans being paid using Paycode’s technology.

Here’s hoping the service expands to more countries and more services – social or otherwise – particularly those in areas where connectivity may not be available or affordable.
