Canon’s new EOS-1D X Mark III is purpose-built for sports and wildlife photography

While much of the focus this week when it comes to consumer technology is on CES 2020, there is something that professional photographers may be interested in as Canon recently unveiled its new EOS-1D X Mark III offering.

This new addition to the premium DSLR lineup is being billed as the “ultimate sports and wildlife camera,” by its Japanese maker, with drastically improved AF tracking highlighted in particular by Canon.

“Canon’s new flagship camera features incredible industry-leading shooting speeds of up to 20fps with AF tracking, along with improved high ISO performance the camera achieves ‘the shot’, every time,” explains a press release regarding the announcement.

To that end the company notes that the centre resolution of the AF sensor available on the EOS-1D X Mark III is 28 times larger than that of its predecessor. The resulting effect is dramatically improved accuracy when focusing on specific subject matters, according to Canon.

Along with the improved AF, Canon has seen fit to give the EOS-1D X Mark III a next generation imaging sensor, which is also paired with a 20.1MP Full Frame CMOS sensor to deliver the widest ISO range that Canon has mustered to date at 50 to 819 200. Added to this is Full Frame 4K video recording as well as 12-bit RAW internal recording.

The manufacturer has given this new camera a number of firsts including built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, which has previously not been available on the EOS-1 range until now.

Given that this camera was unveiled globally less than one day ago, there is no word from Canon South Africa yet as to when it will launch locally, and indeed for how much. We have however seen the body only being listed on local sites, but pricing and pre-order status is yet to be confirmed.

With the EOS-1D X Mark III aimed squarely at pros, it will likely cost a pretty penny. While we wait for that price and availability, enjoy this Canon-produced video shot on the new Mark III below.
