Latest version of Firefox boasts even better tracking protection

Mozilla has released version 72.0 of Firefox and the browser features a rather important improvement for folks looking to escape the prying eyes of advertisers.

That improvement is Firefox 72 now blocking fingerprinting scripts by default. Fingerprinting is the practice whereby a profile of the device you are using is created by an entity. This includes your choice of browser, the software you use and even what fonts are installed on your system.

The problem with fingerprinting is that even if you clear your browser history or go incognito, you are still tracked.

“The latest Firefox browser protects you against fingerprinting by blocking third-party requests to companies that are known to participate in fingerprinting,” writes Mozilla in an update.

“We’ve worked hard to enable this privacy protection while not breaking the websites you enjoy visiting,” the firm added.

Another improvement in Firefox 72 is replacing the notification request pop-ups many websites use, with something more friendly.

Now when you visit a website that wants to push desktop notifications to you, you will see a speech bubble in the URL bar. Users can then opt to no longer receive notifications or simply ignore the alert until they wish to interact with it.

Picture-in-picture video is now available for Firefox on Mac and Linux.

The update also brings several security improvements and bug fixes along with it. You can find the full release notes for Firefox 72 here.
