Unisa releases celebratory highlight video as students struggle to register

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has recently released a “2019 Highlights” video for the institution despite the fact that many of its returning students are mired in registration problems for the first semester of 2020.

As a quick recap of the situation: in December of last year Unisa promised its students that results for the October / November examination period would be made available by 20th December.

If you’re wondering why a university would need to make such a statement, it’s because of Unisa’s long running issues with providing exam results on time. Delays in these releases have a ripple effect on students, negatively affecting parts of their academic lives such as registering on time and securing tuition.

Between 20th December and now, 6th January, more exam results have been released but a sizeable and vocal portion of the student body is without their marks. The situation grows more exasperated by the day, as registration for 2020’s first semester closes on 24th January.

This problem, which has happened in the past, was not helped as the university released the highlights video yesterday showing what it had achieved last year. While it’s perfectly fine for Unisa or any institution to celebrate its accomplishments, it comes across as a jab in the side of the students suffering because of the late results.

Putting all of that aside and watching the video, it is nice to see South African students succeeding in the past year. We can only hope that in 2020 Unisa is a help for more students instead of a hindrance.

For students still awaiting results all we can recommend is contacting those in charge of your modules to try to get an ETA on them. This wasn’t possible before as the university was closed for the holiday season until recently.
