Tracker becomes the latest victim of ransomware

Late last year the City of Joburg was hit by a ransomware attack and now vehicle tracking firm Tracker has been struck.

At the weekend Tracker informed South Africans that it had experienced a ransomware attack that encrypted its systems.

“Tracker has been targeted by a cybercrime attack in the form of ransomware that encrypted information on some systems, disrupting customer access to its services,” wrote Tracker.

The good news is that while the customer facing services aren’t accessible, Tracker is able to continue operations and should be able to recover your vehicle in the event it is stolen.

The firm says that upon detecting the ransomware it took all of its systems offline in a bid to stop the spread of the malware. The exact family of malware that hit Tracker is unknown at this stage.

“Tracker also deployed its IT and cyber security teams and is working closely with global and local third party experts to resolve the matter,” the firm wrote.

System recovery is reportedly underway and some of the affected systems had been restored by Sunday. Customer data was not compromised or accessed the firm added.

In light of this incident Tracker customers have been asked to contact Tracker telephonically on 0800 13 23 23 should their vehicle be hijacked or stolen.

The fact that Tracker is able to get back up and running following its systems being struck by ransomware is rather impressive and goes to show just how vital having a good disaster recovery plan really is.
