Call of Duty players raise more than $1.6 million for Australian fire relief

Last month publisher Activision renamed the Outback DLC bundle in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to the Outback Relief Pack and pledged that the net proceeds from its sales would go towards efforts fighting the bushfires in Australia.

This endeavour ended on 31st January and Activision has now shared the impact its players have made in that time. While no exact amount is provided, this blog post from the company pegs the amount at more than $1.6 million (~R23 640 240).

The money from those who bought the packs is being used in conjunction with Direct Relief to purchase various supplies and assist other local groups in the fire fighting efforts.

Byron Beede, the general manager and executive vice president of Call of Duty at Activision said this about the campaign: “Call of Duty players around the world came together in support of this terrible tragedy. We’re honored to help in this effort with the funds from the Outback Relief pack. We thank everyone for their generosity, and we look forward to putting this donation into action.”

This is far from the first time that the games industry has contributed towards the bushfire efforts in Australia. Humble Bundle, Crytivo, Bungie and many more either outright donated to the various causes or worked with their communities to raise funds in various ways.

As always direct donations can be made without the added bonus of extra DLC or other rewards from publishers and developers, but it’s good to see the gaming industry unite behind a cause like this.
