Sam Raimi may be directing Doctor Strange 2

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the second solo movie for Benedict Cumberbatch’s MCU character, may soon have a director attached in the form of Sam Raimi.

Raimi is, of course, best known for his Tobey Maguire-lead Spider-Man movies which many argue kicked off the love for superhero films that continues to this day. He’s also behind the Evil Dead franchise and is generally beloved by multiple communities.

His involvement in the new Doctor Strange movie has been picked up by Variety, which is usually a solid source when it comes to happenings in Hollywood.

Variety states that Raimi is “in talks’ with Marvel Studios to take over for Scott Derrickson who parted ways with the project in January over creative differences.

Unfortunately, at this point, there’s no further information around Raimi’s involvement as Marvel has not provided a comment to Variety when asked.

Meanwhile, on places like Twitter, the reactions to this news seem to be be good. Spider-Man 3 may have poisoned the well a bit but many still remember the Raimi / Maguire trilogy and are happy to see the director return to a Marvel property.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is slated for a 2021 release date and we know very little about it at this stage. It will apparently have a scary edge to it and the fan theory right now is that the good doctor will be hopping between dimensions on some sort of quest.

There’s also additional theories that Scarlet Witch will somehow be involved, something that may come to light in the Disney+ show WandaVision.

With all these theories and rumours flying around, let’s look at something concrete. It would be a crime to not mention the time when Doctor Strange was mentioned in Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 from 2004. This is four years before the MCU kicked off in earnest with Iron Man and 12 years before the Doctor Strange movie.
