Pokémon’s $250 skateboards are selling out fast

Near the end of January Pokémon announced a partnership with maker of custom skateboards Bear Walker to create a limited series of five products.

No pricing or availability was made public at the time, but now we know that each skateboard will cost $250 (~R3 696) and is being sold on the US Pokémon Center website.

Each of the five designs are dedicated to one Pokémon with all five being from the first generation of the games. Mewtwo, Gengar, Pikachu, Gyarados and Charizard are all represented here.

Instead of being cheap printed designs on flimsy wood, the skateboards’ design is actually milled into the 29inch (73.66 centimetre) maple deck complete with “premium trucks and wheels for a smooth, ready-to-go ride”.

Now for the bad news: in the few hours since orders opened the Pikachu, Charizard and Gengar variants have sold out. This leaves only Mewtwo and Gyarados as purchasable at the time of writing.

While we believe that the Gyarados version is the best looking here, we do understand the disappoint if you were looking forward to the other three. That being said, we do have a reason to be hopeful. This batch of products has been heavily marketed as “Series 1” which implies that more versions are coming in the future.

As limited edition products we’re not sure if any of Series 1 will be restocked in the future, so check out the US Pokémon Center site now if you’re serious about buying.

If you’re seriously considering spending this much on a novelty skateboard you’re probably not too worried about money, but it is worth mentioning that every skateboard here comes with free shipping as it passes the $50 (~R739) spending limit to qualify for it.

There is a purchasing limit of one skateboard design per customer. That means you can pick up multiple versions in one purchase, but no duplicates.
