Canon developing EOS R5 mirrorless camera with 8K video recording and in-body stabilisation

When it comes to professional level mirrorless cameras, Canon’s EOS R range has been step or two behind the likes of Fujifilm and Nikon. That could change though given what the camera maker is working on, with Canon confirming that it is developing the EOS R5.

There is no official release date slated for the camera just yet, but the features that the Japanese company is teasing certainly pique our interest.

Two of the most notable are 8K video recording and in-body stabilisation, with the latter being a first for the EOS R lineup and heavily requested feature among photographers who have used previous offerings in the range.

Shifting to the 8K video recording, there is no mention yet of what components Canon is using to get the job done, but the firm says the video recording will go up to 8K, with downsampling to 4K for crisper content at that resolution.

As mentioned we do not know yet what CMOS sensor the EOS R5 will pack, but Canon says it has made a new one for this mirrorless camera. The company has divulged though that the unit will incorporate a mechanical shutter that operates at an impressive 12fps, with the electronic variant doing so at 20fps.

“The camera’s combination of speed and resolution will set new standards, to make mirrorless an ideal choice for everyone from wedding to wildlife photographers,” says Canon about the EOS R5.

Whether it can live up to that billing remains to be seen, but either way it looks like the professional mirrorless camera segment is hotting up in 2020.
