New Office icons for Windows 10 to be rolled out in coming months

In recent months Microsoft has been detailing a significant design overhaul that it has been working on for Windows 10. We’ve already seen a new logo, updated Edge browser and some of the app icons that have been developed, and now Microsoft has confirmed that said redesigns are set to roll out to devices in coming months.

More specifically Windows 10 users are getting an entirely new set of core app icons, which the firm explains will offer a uniform look to the entire operating system.

“In terms of a system, we can look to the Windows icons as a means of wayfinding. Systems are inherently complex and icons provide simple points of reference,” says design leader at Microsoft, Christina Koehn, in a Medium blog post.

“This design choreography becomes more critical as technology advances. That’s why we’ve embarked on a multi-year effort across Microsoft’s design teams to redesign our icons: a system within a system,” she adds.

As you can see from a preview of the icons above, there is a clear theme that runs throughout, and the change is a welcome one, with Windows 10 looking a tad dated compared to some of the other operating systems on the market.

Add to that the fact that Windows 10 will be Microsoft’s native OS for the foreseeable future, and marking that occasion will require a refresh of sorts.

How Windows 10 users will react to the changes remains to be seen, but we for one quite like the designs. We’d also be interested to see whether a design overhaul of the entire OS is also in the offing, as well as how Microsoft will handle the app icons of over applications or software, which could look quite jarring in contrast to the new lineup.

Either way your Windows 10 is set to look a lot better in the coming months. Unfortunately no precise date mentioned for roll out, with only the next few months highlighted, but they are on their way.
