BioWare believes it can save Anthem

Last year BioWare released Anthem and it landed with the grace of a cupboard pushed from an air freighter.

The game was marketed heavily ahead of release but it wasn’t long before even we abandoned the game because it simply wasn’t engaging.

But there appears to be life in Anthem yet as BioWare general manager, Casey Hudson, has released a blog about the game and its future.

“Over the last year, the team has worked hard to improve stability, performance and general quality of life while delivering three seasons of new content and features,” wrote Hudson.

“We have also heard your feedback that Anthem needs a more satisfying loot experience, better long-term progression and a more fulfilling end game. So we recognize that there’s still more fundamental work to be done to bring out the full potential of the experience, and it will require a more substantial reinvention than an update or expansion,” the GM added.

Over the next few months BioWare will focus on the redesign of the core gameplay loop, while preserving what made Anthem great – the traversal of the world.

The developer has also said that it will focus on testing the game with team doing specifically that, something it knows it should have done before the original release.

What is unclear at this stage is how long BioWare will be taking to fix the game. Considering we are getting this update from Hudson almost a year after the game’s release, we could wait a year or six months. It ultimately comes down to how much work the team has to put in.

The mention of “reinvention” and “redesign” gives us hope but it’s entirely unclear how this will be presented to players.

For those few still playing Anthem, the bad news is that the game’s seasons will no longer be a feature. Instead, BioWare will run the current version of the game as is with occasional refreshes to the store, revisits to past seasonal and cataclysm content and in-game events.

The question we have is whether Anthem can pull off a No Man’s Sky style comeback.

Right now we don’t know but we’ll lean on the side of hope because it seems as if BioWare hasn’t given up on Anthem yet, so maybe there is some life in those bones yet.
