CNET tested the folding hinge of the Motorola razr and it only lasted 27 000 times

The Motorola razr has begun shipping to customers who pre-ordered the new foldable phone Stateside. The device is also getting into the hands of reviewers in the States, and other select regions (not South Africa), to test out the capabilities of the phone.

When it comes to durability though, the latest stress test by CNET does not make for good reading or viewing, as the device could only muster 27 000 folds before it ran into issues and showed signs of breaking.

For context CNET also tested out the Galaxy Fold, which too had its woes in terms of durability, but it still managed to go 119 380 folds.

If we’re going off of the numbers that Engadget cites, most smartphone users in the US check their phones 80 times a day, which means the Motorola razr would only last a year before the folding mechanism gives out.

It should be noted, however, that the foldable screen itself was still intact. As such it looks the components supporting it faltered. Another thing to note is the the “foldbot” that CNET calibrated for this durability test only folded the device halfway, compared to fully opening and closing the Galaxy Fold that was tested.

If you want to see the test in action, as well as the reaction to the breakage, hit play on the video below.

Whether this is simply an anomaly with this particular review unit is unclear, but with more media receiving their own devices for review, we should soon find out if this is symptomatic of the new Motorola razr’s build quality.

Naturally consumers who paid $1 400 to pre-order the device will be concerned if it is.
