Huawei launching Y9s locally, and yes it supports Google services

This week sees a new mid-range smartphone enter an already saturated local market with the Huawei Y9s. This latest offering from the Chinese firm places a heavy focus on camera performance, as well as not being too taxing on the wallet.

We’ll touch on both of those elements shortly, but for those wondering whether the device will support full Google services, Huawei Mobile South Africa has confirmed that it will. As such the issues that plagued the local launch of the Mate 30 Pro are not a problem here, with the Y9s running Android 9.0.

As for what components Huawei has opted for in this mid-range phone, the Chinese firm has gone for a triple camera setup on the rear, with the primary option featuring a massive 48MP lens for highly detailed shots. The other two options include a 8MP ultra wide-angle lens and 2MP depth sensing one. Up front a pop-up 16MP lens has been favoured for taking selfies.

Other noteworthy elements include a 6.59″ FullView display which boasts a Full HD+ resolution and punch hole camera to house the aforementioned selfie camera.

Elsewhere there is a Kirin 710F chipset doing the heavy lifting, along with a generous 6GB of RAM and 128GB onboard storage (microSD slot for an additional 384GB). The Y9s also features a large 4 000mAh battery, so on paper this phone is definitely offering good value for money.

Speaking of which the Y9s carries a recommended price tag of R6 399, with Telkom and the local Huawei Store stocking the device. In an already competitive mid-range space, it will be interesting to see how this phone performs.
